Autaugaville

Autaugaville is a town in Autauga County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 795. It is part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. William Thompson, the first settler in what is now Autaugavile arrived around 1820 and built a gristmill and sawmill on Swift Creek, about three miles upriver from the Alabama River. One source says that the town incorporated in 1839, but another cites 1907. A cotton mill opened in 1849 on the banks of Swift Creek. The town's first and only newspaper, the Autauga Citizen, also began publication in 1853, existing until 1873. The Civil War and Reconstruction resulted in the closing of the town's factories, including the cotton factory, which saw its shipments seized by the U.S. government. Crystal Lake Manufacturing Company makes brooms, mops, and handles in Autaugville but closed at the end of 2020. Autaugiville is home to Autaugoville School for prekindergarten to grade 12 students for pre-school to 12th grade students. In 2010, there were 870 people, 350 households, and 243 families residing in the town. For every 100 males over the age of 100, there are 91 males over 100. In the town, the average household size was 3.49 and the average family size was 2.49. In 2020, the town has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20 km²), of which, 7.6 square miles of it is land.

Geography

Autaugaville is located at 32°2557N 86°3932W (32.432563, -86.658752).The town is located in the central part of the state along Alabama State Route 14.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20 km²) of which, 7.6 square miles of it is land and 0.2 sq mi (0.52 km) ofit is water. The town is part of Autauga County, which is in the north-central part of Alabama and includes the cities of Prattville, Selma, and Selma-Phenix City. It is located on the Alabama Turnpike, which runs through the center of the town, leading east 14 mi (23 km) to Prattville and west 24 mi (39km) to Selma. It also has a post office, which serves the town of Autaugavilles. It has a population of 1,838. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located near the town's center, at the intersection of Alabama State Routes 14 and 1.4 mi (2.4 km) from Selma and 2.6 mi (4.7km) from Prattville. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the early 1900s. The site is also known as the birthplace of the Civil War, which was fought from 1877 to 1883.

History

Autaugaville was founded in 1820 by William Thompson, who built a gristmill and sawmill on Swift Creek. A cotton mill opened in 1849 on the banks of Swift Creek, and following upon the model of industrialist Daniel Pratt, the owner constructed housing for its employees. By 1851, the town had a population of 351 and claimed four stores, two churches, and two schools. The Civil War and Reconstruction resulted in the closing of the town's factories, including the cotton factory, which saw its shipments seized by the U.S. government. The town incorporated in 1907, and the Alabama Central Railroad built a branch through town in 1911. In 1936, an Alabama Forestry Commission nursery opened near town. Crystal Lake Manufacturing Company makes brooms, mops, and handles in Autaugville but closed at the end of 2020. It will be replaced by a new company that will make mops and handles for the home furnishings market. It is expected to open in the spring or summer of 2015, and will be open for about a year. The company will be based at the former site of the Autauga Citizen newspaper, which began publication in 1853, existing until 1873. It was the first newspaper to be published in the state of Alabama. It has been published since 1853 and is the only one to survive the Civil War, which ended in 1865. It also published a newspaper from 1853 to 1873, until it was replaced by another newspaper.

Education

Autaugaville is part of the Autauga County School System. It is home to Autaugavilles School for prekindergarten to grade 12 students. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. The city is located on the banks of the Black Warrior River, which flows through the town. The Black Warrior is a popular tourist destination in the area, particularly in the summer months. The community also has a reputation for being a good place to live and raise a family. It has a history that dates back to the 18th century. It still has a strong connection to the town's history and is still home to some of its residents today, including its original residents, including former mayor and current mayor of the town of Autaugville, William "Bill" Caudle, who was born and raised in the town and attended school there. The village is also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a bank and a bank. It's also the home of the local hospital, which opened its doors in 1885.

Autaugaville first appeared on the census as an incorporated town in 1910. As of the 2020 United States census, there were 795 people, 444 households, and 299 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 66.8% Black or African American, 31.3% White, 0.2% Native American, and 1.4% from two or more races. The per capita income for the town is $12,586. 27.1% of the population and 27.4%. of families were below the poverty line. The median income for a household in the city was $22,563, and for a family was $35,417. The average household size was 2.59, and the average family size was 3.18. The town has a population of 870 people, with 384 housing units at an average density of 49.7 per square mile (19.2/km²), and a median age of 36.3 years. For every 100 females, there are 91.1 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over,there are 87.6 males. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the town's population will rise to 795 by the end of the decade, with a population growth rate of 0.7% from the 2010 census to 870 by the year's end. The city has a median household income of $22.563 and the median family income is $35.417. In the town, the population was spread out, with 31.1%. under the age of 18, 8.9%. from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 20.2%. from 45 to 64, and 13.3%. from 65 and older.

Autaugaville Precinct/Division (1850-)

Autaugaville, the 2nd Beat of Autauga County, first reported a population for the 1850 U.S. Census (but not tabulated until the 1870 census). In 1890, it became the 3rd Precinct (Autauga County) and continued to report to 1950. In 1960, it was changed to census division as part of a general reorganization of counties. Other than the 1850 figure, which reported a White majority, the other censuses that reported racial demographics for precincts and divisions (186070; 193040; 1960-2010) reported a Black majority in each instance. It is also possible the figure was for the population of the town itself, as it also ignored the substantial Black population in the area. The low figure of 82, however, may have underreported the total population (as the population for Prattville Beat was not reported and the figures for the remaining beats did not add up to the total county population for that census). It is possible that this figure was also just thePopulation of the Town of Prattville, as this was also only the White residents. It was also possible that the low figure was just the White population, as the Black population was also included in this figure. The figure was 82, but it may have been underreported as it did not include the number of Black residents in Prattville. It may also have been for the whole town, as there was a large Black population there. It reported a low population of 82 in the 1850 census.
